Calcaneal Apophysitis - my 10 year old son has it

My son was just diagnosed with Calcaneal Apophysitis. I wanted opinions on whether over-the-counter or over-the-internet shoe inserts worked as well as the expensive custom made orthotics. Any recommendations for brand names would be greatly appreciated!
