Toe Pain

I'm having severe pain on the front tip and left side of my left toe. It is similar to ingrown toe nail pain, but much more intense and I do not have an ingrown toe nail. I did not stub my toe. It is a dull to serious pain at rest, it is now a warm, burning type pain...but when I touch it it is a sharp, piercing pain. Any idea?
