Yes warts are contagious. Viral diseases are all transmittable, but not everyone who is exposed will get it. One way to avoid warts is to avoid contact. As far as prevention, I'm not sure socks represent a solid barrier. The virus particles are shed and certainly can get through. I am not aware of any published study that documents effective and proven prevention of warts. Most information is anecdotal.

I am sorry I can't give you absolute information, but warts can be unpredictable.
