side foot pain

I have pain on the side of my right foot. It burns and by the end of the day my ankle is swollen and the top of my foot looks bruised. I went to an orthopedic specialist and he took x-rays to rule out breaks. Said it could be a hair line fracture or tendinitis. He wasn't sure. Wasn't real interested. It eased up for about a year but has come back with a vengenance. I think I am about to lose my mind. I have seen similar problems on line but no response. Please help.
