drop foot and swollen ankle

During a back surgery that was performed, i woke up with drop foot and it is now 6 months later and my Doctor says that it will be permanent. i am wondering what could cause the ankle to be continously swollen for the past two months, plus a blister i got on the big toe will not heal at all and its been one month since it has broke.
