Top of foot numb and foot won't do extension

My husband woke one morning to the top of his foot feeling like it was asleep and he can not move his foot up. He can move toes and move it side to side and down but not up. He is not wanting to go to the doctor but I keep telling him he needs to. Can you please tell me what may be the problem?
