Is my toe fractured or just "jammed"?

i tripped over my cat two days ago and fell, with my left big toe hitting the floor first, it's not really swollen, just a little bit, but it still hurts a lot. i guess my question is, after what length of time does the pain indicate more than just a "stumped" or "jammed" toe? If it's just jammed, should it stop hurting soon?
