Without seeing your toe, I can not give you an exact answer. It is possible that you have a fracture, or there is blood under the nail (a hematoma) which can be a problem too. The best thing for you to do is see a podiatrist and have it evaluated.

The big toe should never be taped to any other toe. It functions differently thant he lesser toes. As far as cushioning it, we have some tube foam that can be used for this purpose, but you still should see a podiatrist.
