fractured fifth metatarsel

2 years ago I fractured my 5th metatarsel. I was in a cast for 6 weeks.
3 weeks ago, I some how fracutred it again. This time however, due to the fact of having no insurance, my doctor has suguested just wrapping it in an ace bandage. The pain seems to be worsening. Is there anything else I could be doing, short of getting a cast?
