I just started my OB/GYN residency and can be on my feet for 30 hours straight. I wear comfortable BASS clogs which I've had for a couple years. After my first night on call, I noticed my 5th toe on the R foot was numb on the lateral side and also under the MP joint. It has been numb almost 2 weeks now. I just finished another 30 hr call yesterday, and now my big toe on the R foot is numb on the medial side. I am young, athletic, healthy, run about 2-3 miles 3 times a week. No diabetes or any health problems. Several months ago, I had what I believed to be Morton's neuroma on the opposite foot, affecting the 2nd-3rd toes, but it resolved spontaneously after several days. The numbness feels as if you were outside in the winter for too long and your toes get painful, numb. I still have pressure, proprioception, and motor control. However, I sense no touch or pain. It is a very odd feeling and I find myself tripping and hurting my R foot due to the loss of sensation. I will end up seeing a DPM in the near future. I would like to know what are the causes of toe numbness, and possible therapies. I would also like your recommendations for shoes, I'm looking to buy some new clogs for work. I am willing to spend up to $200 if necessary. I understand that my feet are essential to my function as a doctor, so I need to take care of them.
